Modelling Crassostrea gigas growth and reproduction in different contrasted ecosystems by using dynamic energy budgets : generic validation of the oyster-DEB model ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Le Moine, Olivier; Geairon, Philippe; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or...

REMOULA 2000 - Réseau de croissance moule des Pertuis Charentais - Mars 2000 - Février 2001 ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Geairon, Philippe; Guilpain, Patrice; Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Seugnet, Jean-luc; Grizon, James; Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Goulletquer, Philippe.
A production monitoring network focused on the blue mussel Mytilus edulis, was developed at the Charentais sounds' geographic level to assess the spatial and temporal variability of the mussel production. Similarly to the oyster growth monitoring network REMORA, an homogeneous and calibrated mussel population (L = 35.5 mm, TW = 3.35 g) was distributed into six rearing sites, representative of the sounds production. The rearing technics were compared and intercalibrated with previous growout facilities used for preliminary trials (round bags-oyster bags). The monitoring was based upon biometric and biochemical measurements on a 3 month and monthly basis, for ail and 3 sites respectively. The mortality rates showed a significant spatial and temporal...

Recent invasion of the Japanese oyster drill along the French Atlantic coast: identification of specific molecular markers that differentiate Japanese, Ocinebrellus inornatus, and European, Ocenebra erinacea, oyster drills ArchiMer
Garcia Meunier, Pascale; Martel, Corine; Pigeot, Jacques; Chevalier, Guillemette; Blanchard, Gérard; Goulletquer, Philippe; Robert, Stephane; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
The direct amplification of length polymorphism technique (DALP) has been used to distinguish species-specific banding patterns in two marine gastropod oyster drills Ocenebra erinacea (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ocinebrellus inornatus (Recluz, 1851). Ocenebra erinacea is the European oyster drill, common along all European coasts. Ocinebrellus inornatus, the Japanese oyster drill, was recorded in oyster growing areas of the Marennes-Oleron Bay (SW France) for the first time in 1995. This new biological invasion could lead to an increase, which must be evaluated, in the predation risk for cultivated species i.e. oysters and blue mussels, and for littoral fishing resources along the French Atlantic coasts. As a result, since specific identification of early life...

Shelled Molluscs ArchiMer
Berthou, Patrick; Poutiers, Jean-maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Dao, Jean-claude.
Shelled molluscs are comprised of bivalves and gastropods. They are settled mainly on the continental shelf as benthic and sedentary animals due to their heavy protective shell. They can stand a wide range of environmental conditions. They are found in the whole trophic chain and are particle feeders, herbivorous, carnivorous, and predators. Exploited mollusc species are numerous. The main groups of gastropods are the whelks, conchs, abalones, tops, and turbans; and those of bivalve species are oysters, mussels, scallops, and clams. They are mainly used for food, but also for ornamental purposes, in shellcraft industries and jewelery. Consumed species are produced by fisheries and aquaculture, the latter representing 75% of the total 11.4 millions metric...

A single bio-energetics growth and reproduction model for the oyster Crassostrea gigas in six Atlantic ecosystems ArchiMer
Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Bourles, Yves; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Stephane; Mazurie, Joseph; Gangnery, Aline; Goulletquer, Philippe; Pouvreau, Stephane.
Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du...

Sellier, Marion; Poitevin, Pierre; Goraguer, Herle; Faure, Jean-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This work, conducted in 2013 , is a first monitoring of marine invasive species in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago. In global changing context on coastal ecosystems , accentuated by direct or indirect effects of human activities, it became essential to implement a survey on marine invasive species on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon shoreline. Fukui traps and tunicates collectors implemented on different stations as well as the timely completion of observational dives , have established the following conclusions : several non native species were detected within the local marine ecosystem. This species , such as Carcinus maenas , Ciona intestinalis , Botryllus schlosseri , Caprella mutica , etc. ... threaten some local marine ecosystems and some local...

Marine biodiversity and ecosystems' services : an updated research agenda as a follow up of the 2010 targets... ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) demonstrated that the biodiversity is the keystone for the sustainaibility of present and future ecosystems services. In spite of the highly significant effort carried out by the Census of Marine Life over the last ten years, and an increasing research effort, marine biodiversity and precise ecosystem functioning remain largely unknown and failure to reach the CBD 2010 objectives is obvious. Meanwhile, the concept of ‘ecosystem approach’ is progressing, translated into new policies such as the revised European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). We might question if the scientific community is ready enough to built scenarios for the future and provide integrated advice to the policy makers for biodiversity conservation...

Combined effects of temperature-salinity on larval survival of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeak Bay (USA) ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean.
Oyster landings in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay have declined by more than 50fold since the early part of the century, despite intensive management efforts. The annual shell repletion program is the most critical programmatic element to effect recovery of the ailing Eastern oyster Crassotrea virginica stock and fishery. The overall efficacy of shell repletion management depends primarily on the success of spat settlement on the planted shell, and furthermore on their survival rate. The Operations Research techniques and mathematical programming developed by Rothschild et al. (1991) attempt to maximize spat recruitment to the oyster stock subject to a series of operational constraints. Allocation and timing of shell deployment are the most...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Lagarde, Franck.

Open atlantic coast of Europe - a century of introduced species into french waters ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Bachelet, G; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Noel, P.
This paper aims to establish a comprehensive Iist of exotic species introduced into Atlantic French waters over the last century as well as their origin, and the vectors involved in the process. At least 104 non indigenous species have been recorded in the Atlantic and Channel coastal wa• ters. Among those species, only a few (Bonamia ostreae, Crepidula fornicata) have resulted in highly significant negative impacts and side-effects on the coastal activity. In contrast, the introduction of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas can be considered to be successful, sustaining a large industry counting more than 4,000 companies and 150,000 tons of yearly production. Over the last decade, French and European laws have strenghtened the controls over exotic...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Le Moine, Olivier; Goulletquer, Philippe; Geairon, Philippe; Razet, Daniel; Faury, Nicole; Fouche, Dominique; Robert, Stephane.

Modelling growth and reproduction of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: Advances in the oyster-DEB model through application to a coastal pond ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Tollu, Guillaume; Leguay, Didier; Arnaud, Christophe; Goulletquer, Philippe; Kooijman, S.
A bio-energetic model, based on the DEB theory exists for the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Pouvreau et al. [Pouvreau, S., Bourles, Y., Lefebvre, S., Gangnery, A., Alunno-Bruscia, M., 2006. Application of a dynamic energy budget model to the Pacific oyster, C. gigas, reared under various environmental conditions. J. Sea Res. 56, 156–167.] successfully applied this model to oysters reared in three environments with no tide and low turbidity, using chlorophyll a concentration as food quantifier. However, the robustness of the oyster-DEB model needs to be validated in varying environments where different food quantifiers reflect the food available for oysters, as is the case in estuaries and most coastal ecosystems. We therefore tested the oyster-DEB...
